El Fenix lays claim to being the Original Tex Mex Restaurant with a story 100 years in the making. The first El Fenix was opened in Dallas by Miguel Martinez who moved from Mexico to Dallas in 1911 (the same year John Browning developed the now ubiquitous model 1911 Colt Government Service Pistol but that is a story for another day . . . maybe Tuesday if your not busy?) Five years after arriving in Dallas, Miguel opened his first restaurant at the corner of Griffin St. & McKinney Ave in an area then knowns as Little Mexico and over the next three years he developed and offered “Anglo-American” dishes and in 1918, he dubbed the cuisine “Tex-Mex”. 100 years later, El Fenix still exist albeit with 21 locations and they boast D Magazine’s Best Tex Mex Restaurant award for 5 of the last 8 years. May I interest you in some Queso mis Amigos?
